Cute girl just got purchased a 2006 XC90 from CL not too long ago. Suddenly, the CEL and ABS lights came on. She requested we look it over.
Plugged the Dice in it, did a system check on VIDA, and looked it over...
-Needs entire ABS pump and control unit plus software reload
-Front Fog lights are cracked, she wanted a price
-Fault found in acceleration pedal
-Fault found in ECM plus software reload
-Spring seats are busted (plus alignment)
-Fuel rail pressure sensor has a fault code
with diag check out, labor, and tax, she is looking around $6800.
OPPO CHALLENGE:
How will you perceive this vehicle? Specifically, if someone is looking for a car and they ask you if the Volvo XC90 is a good car. Do you tell them...
A. From what I have heard, they are safe and fairly reliable. Online reviews are pretty positive and it shouldn't give you too many issues. Plus, it has a lot of safety features both active and passive. I can't recall of anything bad that is too common on those. Definitely go at least check it out and test drive it.
or
B. Don't get an XC90. I heard that a bunch of ECU's go out on them all the time and they are suuuuper expensive to fix. One time on OPPO, this one person's XC90 needed like $7000 in repairs. It's not worth it, look for something else.
Alternate answer would be, "Get a C5 Z06 and fuck the police!"
Note, I have never sold that ABS pump but other dealers have. Not common at all just like the acceleration pedal. It is difficult to know on ANY car what exactly are the common issues. Also, there can be one of the exact same vehicle to never have issues and another to have a bunch more. Luck of the draw?

Are you sure the alignment isn't throwing the codes for the ABS module? The same thing just happened to my E46 because the steering angle sensor was off. Can you check to see if ABS engages?

Doesn't seem like anything major but a lot of little things, I feel this will be a trend in vehicles moving forward as they get more and more complicated.
Volvo of now isn't the Volvo off the 244 era but still reliable. Overall, stuff being from Sweden doesn't help the price point either though.

Id say: They are good if they have been maintained well. If you come across one with condensed/yellowed headlights, dirty, not cared for, run away. run far away.
If they have been cared for, I would recommened one 100%

The XC90 is a fine car. I however would not pay $100 for a new accelerator pedal.

I love computer programs that just give no fucks and refuse to catch up with the five generations of GUI design that have passed by since this era. If it ain't broke don't fix it, right?

And of course, 05+ ABS modules cant be resoldered like the old style 850/v70 ones. I have a stash of those around all soldered up and ready to go should I ever get another 850/V70 with ABS/TRACS. I wouldn't ever recommend those to anyone. I think they are ok, drive ok, but are nuts to fix unless you do your own wrenching. But then again, if you are going to wrench on it grab an 04 down because at least when your fuel pump dies you can look to a relay on it and not think you have to replace the ECU. Ugh Volvo, what have you done to yourselves.
OK alternate question, if Volvo was to come out with a true 240/740/940 successor, do you think it would be viable? Simple car, simple to fix, boxy as hell with few options to break, 25-35K price point. I have been thinking this for years and cannot see why they cannot do it, if they weren't so invested in going tete-a-tete with BMW, Audi and Benz

Correct, it would throw a steering angle sensor code if it was way off. Plus, an SRS light would appear. Not the case here. This pump is D E D dead. Alignment is for the spring seats since the shock/spindle bolts are loosened

am thinking weak battery confused the ECU which explains all the fuel-delivery fault codes (gas pedal, fuel rail, ECU fault itself.)
Reset all codes. See if it breaks again. Test battery.

The internals of the pump are shit. So bad that is gets suuuper hot if you activate it on VIDA.
Volvo's main line will just be alternated of the XC90's SPA platform (S60, V60, XC60). The SPC platform will be for the S40,V40, C30, C70 successors (confirmed). Volvo also has confirmed the S90/V90 replacement probably for the Chinese market only on a different platform. I don't think they will do a true 240/740/940 successor because of how well the S60 is doing worldwide and that also makes me sad :'(

batt is good, codes do not go away. Pump internals are crap. If activated on VIDA, it starts to smoke from how how it gets. Pressure sensor, ECM, and pedal codes are permanent. A simple reset will not fix this car unfortunately. Those parts are bad

I hate it when director's, board members, etc dictate that we should stay on one of these platforms. Innovation and moving tech forward are my bread and butter, and I don't have time to learn from Jimbob how he has been jury-rigging this system to work for the last 12 years.
If a new system management member takes over and cannot figure out what the hell was done to get the system operating in the first place, it's gotta go bitch.

good engine, but the engineering and tech of the new T-6 is beyond incredible. Especially since it is now 100% Volvo made

They don't build them like they used to, eh?
I wouldn't let any of those items throw me off purchasing an older XC90 - how often do ABS pumps go out? I've never heard of it being a common issue.

I generally don't recommend the XC90 past 100k, especially the T6 or V8s. They're somewhere between the 1st gen BMW X5 (best) and 1st gen MBZ ML or VW Touareg (worst) in quality & longevity for Euro SUVs. That first 100 is great, but they tend not to age very well after that, and given their values at that point, they find their way into the hands of people looking for a safe, cheap family hauler but who are unprepared for the maintenance and repair costs commensurate with a $50k European car. At least the T5 is almost impossible to kill.
